Which Is Europe's Strongest League Right Now?
The Premier League leads, Ligue 1 is second and Serie A only fifth: Footiqra's league strength ranking of Europe's top seven leagues.
· 3 min read
The Premier League is Europe's strongest league, and by a clear margin. That is the verdict of the Footiqra power ranking as of 2 November 2026. Behind it, the order looks different from what most fans would guess: Ligue 1 ranks second, ahead of La Liga, while Serie A has dropped to fifth.
The league strength ranking
League strength measures how strong a league is compared with the others, based on results in European competition since 2024/25. Zero is the average of the seven leagues. Why league strength matters explains the idea.
| Rank | League | Strength | At season start | Change | Avg. rating | Top 20 clubs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Premier League | +88 | +97 | −8 | 1594 | 8 |
| 2 | Ligue 1 | +43 | +45 | −2 | 1549 | 3 |
| 3 | La Liga | +32 | −2 | +35 | 1534 | 4 |
| 4 | Bundesliga | −5 | −3 | −2 | 1497 | 2 |
| 5 | Serie A | −17 | −7 | −10 | 1487 | 3 |
| 6 | Eredivisie | −67 | −64 | −3 | 1435 | 0 |
| 7 | Primeira Liga | −74 | −65 | −9 | 1425 | 0 |

Premier League: strong at the top and in depth
The Premier League is first by every measure: league strength, average club rating and clubs at the very top. Eight of the 20 highest-rated clubs in Europe play in England, led by Arsenal at number one. Seventeen of the top 50 are English.
How big is the lead? A gap of 46 points to Ligue 1 means that two otherwise equal clubs would give the Premier League side an expected score of about 57% on neutral ground. Against the Primeira Liga, the gap of 163 points means about 72%.
Ligue 1 ahead of La Liga
Ligue 1's second place is the biggest surprise compared with the UEFA coefficients, where France is only fifth. Its strength comes from European results since 2024/25, including Paris Saint-Germain's Champions League title in 2025. PSG are currently second in the power ranking.
La Liga is the league on the move. It has gained 35 points since the start of the season, more than any other league, thanks to strong European results this autumn. Barcelona and Real Madrid sit third and fourth in Europe. If the trend continues, La Liga could overtake Ligue 1 soon.
Serie A slips to fifth
By UEFA coefficient, Serie A is Europe's second-strongest league. In Footiqra's ranking, its European results since 2024/25 have pulled it below the Bundesliga, and it has lost another 10 points this season. Inter are the highest-rated Italian club, in 11th place.
Eredivisie and Primeira Liga
Both leagues sit well below the big five, which fits their UEFA coefficients. Their best clubs still compete with good big-league sides: Sporting are 23rd in Europe, PSV 25th. How close they really are to the big five is a question we will come back to soon.
How reliable is this?
League strength rests on comparatively few matches: only around 25 games this season have connected two of the seven leagues so far. A few results in the Champions League can still move the order, especially in the close race between Ligue 1 and La Liga. We will update this ranking as the season goes on.
